A reflective essay on founders, storytelling & Europe

The Impossibleis Our Business

Storytelling, founders, and Europe's path forward—a journey from Helsinki to the future of entrepreneurship.

Context

This essay is my response to Anton Osika's LinkedIn post calling on engineering and product leaders in Stockholm and Europe to step up for European sovereignty. Anton is the founder of Lovable — one of the companies I believe is true to the mission of helping the next generation of world-conquering founders forward. This is my answer.

TL;DR
  • I helped build Slush from Helsinki—proving impossible things can emerge from unlikely places.
  • As AI commoditizes software, storytelling becomes the true competitive differentiator for founders.
  • I'm building StoryRoots to help founders craft narratives that connect their vision to the world.
  • Europe can build world-class companies alongside (not against) American innovation.
  • The next generation of founders is waiting. The impossible is our business.
01

The Impossible is Our Business

On conviction born from unlikely places

There is a particular kind of conviction that emerges from having accomplished something that seemed unlikely from the start. Not the confidence of the well-resourced—but the clarity that comes from standing in an unexpected place and watching it become real. From Helsinki, a city near the eastern edge of Europe, to a global gathering that changed how founders think about their futures.

When I was at Slush, the framing was precise: the impossible is our business. Not as a slogan, but as an operating principle. The mission was never to create the most founder-focused event ever. It was to help the next generation of founders move forward. The event was simply a vessel for that mission.

"The impossible is our business."

The shift

AI meets storytelling

I recognized that as AI commoditizes software, storytelling becomes the true differentiator.

02

When Software Becomes Commodity

AI changes everything—except what matters most

Something shifted when I began thinking seriously about what happens as AI moves deeper into software. If AI eats software—and the evidence suggests it will—what remains as genuine differentiation?

The answer is storytelling. Not a romantic notion about narrative—a structural observation about competitive advantage. When code is replicable and AI can generate functional software at scale, the thing that distinguishes one founder from another is the story that connects their work to the world.

As AI capabilities expand, storytelling will shift from a peripheral concern to a core competitive asset, as fundamental as product quality once was.

03

The Pivot Toward Story

From mission to action

I had spent years in founder support, but I had not become a founder myself until a few years ago. My first venture faltered—wrong team, wrong problem, no hair-on-fire urgency. But the underlying conviction remained intact: founders need help with their stories, and this need is becoming more essential, not less.

This is why I have poured my energy into StoryRoots—an application designed to help founders craft their narratives. At a moment when software itself is being democratized by AI, the ability to tell a story that compels attention and communicates not just what you've built but why it matters has become the true frontier of differentiation.

"The tools have evolved. The conviction remains."

Europe's Collaborative Future

Building alongside, not against

I believe Europe can build world-class companies—not in competition with American innovation, but in genuine collaboration with it. Europe has distinct strengths: regulatory sophistication, cultural depth, technical expertise. The path forward is not replication. It is building alongside, leveraging what makes Europe unique while connecting to global markets.

Companies like Lovable come to mind—organizations emerging from Europe but operating at global scale, not because they copied an American playbook, but because they brought something distinctly European to bear on a global problem. Placing Europe on the map as a formidable economic area might sound impossible. And perhaps it is, in the way that genuinely significant things always are—until they are not.

05

Learning from the Helsinki Impossibility

When impossible became inevitable

When Slush began, it emerged from a capital city that most of the world had never heard of. The idea that from Helsinki would emerge a globally significant event that reshaped how founders thought about community—this was the impossibility that became possible.

It happened because a group of people became clear about a mission and constructed the conditions for it to scale. Slush has since evolved away from its original mission. But the fact that it was possible proves something essential: the impossible is not fixed. It shifts based on conviction, clarity, and sustained effort.

06

The Next Generation Awaits

The work of this moment

For the next generation of world-conquering founders, the need is not for another replication of what succeeded before. It is for founders who understand their story, who can articulate why their vision matters, who can connect their work to something larger than code or features.

The next generation of founders is waiting to tell their stories. The question is whether they will have the support, the tools, and the community to do it effectively. Building that infrastructure across Europe and beyond is the work of this moment. It is impossible work. And the impossible is our business.

"The next generation of founders is waiting to tell their stories."

Raw transcript

Nicolas in his own words

Unedited voice memos recorded through Story Routes — the raw material behind the essay.

[00:00] Nicolas Dolenc: Lo-- [clears throat] The impossible is our business, is what I used to say my last year at Slush, uh, the place I feel I professionally got born. And our mission at the time at Slush was we help the next generation founders forward. It wasn't creating the most founder-focused event ever. The mission was greater than that, and the event was simply a tool. Um, and I followed that mission, and, and I think I have followed that mission in different various ways, um, to a fault, uh, for a very long time, um, by not, uh, becoming a founder myself until, um, a few years ago when I did a lot of thinking about what the future holds when AI eats everything and AI eats software. So what will remain is great storytelling. Uh, so that will never change, and it will become increasingly more important when it comes to distinguishing yourself from others, uh, when software is the same. And, um, I discontinued on a project, uh, because it wasn't what we set out to do in Storyworld, uh, when I first became a founder was it was the wrong team and not a hair-on-fire problem. But I've been still trying to tackle the storytelling aspect, and I'm, uh, writing you this letter today through my new app called Story Routes, which helps founders create their stories. And [clears throat] so I'm still here trying to help founders one way or another. I'm still here trying to figure out how storytelling fits it all. And I'm a patriot in the way that, uh, I believe we can build from Europe, but not on the cost of our American counterparts, but as a, uh, collaborative endeavor. We have our uniqueness. We have our strengths. Um, and I think, like, humanity at large needs those and our to-- and our-- and us to succeed. And, um, yeah, when I've been thi-thinking about, like, what are the best places where the mission of helping founders one way or another, um, out of Europe, Lovable comes to mind. And I think that is why this is interesting, and I'm sending you this, this email. Um, and it might seem impossible, um, to put Europe on the global map as a formidable economic area compared to China and the US, but the impossible was always our business, uh, because-- And I know it's possible because when we set out to do Slush, we were somewhere in the eastern parts of Europe near the Russian border in a little capital nobody knew about called Helsinki, uh, that people didn't even, you know. There were a time when people didn't actually think we even existed, and we still made it possible, and it's still there. And it's, uh, has evolved to something else, but it's diverged from its original mission. So that's why I know the impossible is our business, and we can still help those world-conquering founders forward. We can still help the next generation of world-conquering founders forward.

Behind the scenes

How this was made

This entire project — essay, design, and outreach email — was built live in Lovable. Here's the unedited recording and the email it helped me write.

📧 The outreach email— drafted by Lovable's project chat
Subject: From Slush to Lovable — Why I Want to Help Build What's Next for European Founders

Hi Lovable team,

My name is Nicolas Dolenc. I'm writing because Anton's recent LinkedIn post about engineering and product leaders stepping up for European sovereignty struck a deep chord — it's a mission I've lived.

The short version: I spent years at Slush helping build the ecosystem that turned Helsinki into a global startup capital. Our mission was never "run a great event" — it was help the next generation of world-conquering founders forward. I believe Lovable is the company most authentically carrying that mission forward today.

To show rather than tell, I built an interactive storytelling experience using Lovable that walks through my journey — from Slush to founding StoryRoots — and why I see European AI sovereignty as the defining challenge of our generation. I recorded the entire build process unedited so you can see how I think, create, and work with AI tools in real time. And yes — I even used Lovable's project chat to draft this very email you're reading. It felt only right to let the product make its own case.
